Illinois Basketball Fact: Tyra Buss who played at Mt. Carmel H.S., Mt. Carmel, Illinois scored 4,897 points between 2010-2014. This is the most points scored in Illinois High School Basketball, Boys or Girls. She did this in 129 games.

If you travel to Southern IL. You are in Herrin Territory. Legendary Coach Rich Herrin has won nearly 1,000 games. His success @ Okawville, Benton & SIU are remarkable. At Benton his teams won 21 Regionals, 7 Sectionals & made 5 Elite 8 trips. Three x he took SIU to the NCAA.

The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association & the Basketball Museum of Illinois congratulate Lincoln H.S. Boys Basketball Coach on winning his 900th game. More important than this terrific milestone is the impact Coach Alexander has had on so many lives.

Dominic Cannon has been a long-time assistant & head coach in the Chicago Land Region. He has coached @ Palatine, Prospect, York & Chicago St. Patrick high schools. In 2019, Dominic was inducted into the IBCA HOF as a career coach.

Pat Ambrose of Stevenson H.S. is a member of the 2020 IBCA HOF Class. Pat's 2015 team captured the Class 4A State Title. His teams have won 4 state finals trophies to go along with 9 regional & 5 sectional plaques. Pat's teams have 450 games.

Bruce Douglas led Quincy to their most successful seasons in history, including an undefeated state championship. He was Mr. Basketball in 1982. Bruce's leadership keyed Illinois to 4 NCAA appearances. He was All Big Ten & Def. Player of the Year in 85 & 86.

After the 2019-2020 season, this is what the All-Time Boys School Victories list looks like. We believe Elgin would be in the top 15, but they have many missing yrs. They need a researcher. West Aurora was 1 victory short of cracking the top 30.

Greg Sapp of Effingham is known as the "Gold Standard" for sports reporting in East Central & Southern Illinois. The IBCA Media HOF'er began covering high school basketball games during the 1977-78 season. Greg is the recipient of the IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award.

Congratulations to Coach Sean Taylor who won his second state championship. His first state title came when he was the head coach at Shelbyville High School in 1996. His Moline team played brilliantly last night in defeating a well-coached & tough Benet Academy team.

Scott Miller has coached 2 different schools to the Final Four, Plano in 1999 & Glenbard East in 2011. Scott retired as the winningest boys coach in Glenbard East history with 316 wins & 7 regional titles. Miller is an IBCA HOF Career Coach, Class of 2020.

Congratulations to Vince Doran on his selection into the IBCA HOF Class of 2020 as a player. Vince played @ Addison Driscoll H.S (84-88) & Elmhurst College. At Driscoll he held 28 school records & in coll. he was All-CCIW 2 years. He was a coach on the floor with great vision.

Boys All Time Victory List We believe that Joliet Central and Moline could possibly be on this list. We are waiting on them to finish their research.

Quentin Richardson (IBCA HOF) is one of Chicago's finest basketball players. The All-Stater led Whitney Young to the 1998 state title. He then played @ DePaul where he scored 1,000pts, had 500 rebs. & made 100 3's in 2 yrs. Quentin then turned pro & played in the NBA for 14 yrs.

We are excited that EIU has hired Marty Simmons to be their next Men's Basketball Coach. Marty is one of our greats, scoring 2,986 pts. @ Lawrenceville & leading them to back-to- back 34-0 seasons. He was IL. Mr. Basketball in 1983 & is in the IBCA HOF. Best Swishes Marty!

When it comes to knowing Quincy Basketball Hist., Matt Schuckman is one of the best. Matt has covered Quincy H.S. & Quincy U. for the Quincy Hearald Whig & has been a color commentator for WGEM. His book "Stand Up & Cheer" is a must read on Quincy H.S.. Matt is in the IBCA HOF.

One of the great basketball shrines in IL. Is Trout Gym & the stained glass windows in the old Centrala H.S.. It was built in 1936 & named after their coach, Arthur Trout. The glass was Arthur's idea & it came from Germany. It is so fragile it could not be moved to the new h.s..

Bryan Tucker, was inducted into the IBCA HOF as a coach, Class of 2020. He has coached @ Marian, Wilmette Loyola & @ Barrington. In 24 yrs. Bryan's teams have won 436x, 8 Regionals & 3 Sectional Titles.

Congratulations to Patrick Walsh of Mt.Pulaski in becoming a HOF Official (Class of 2020). Patrick worked 25 Regionals, 18 Sectionals, 6 Super-Sectionals & 3 State Finals (2010, 11 & 13) including the 2011 Championship. His resume also includes 15 yrs. as an IHSA Clinician.

Greg Leib, IBCA HOF Coach, has won over 400 games, most of them for Belleville Althoff. His teams have won 9 Regionals, 3 Sectionals, but the real highlight came in 2016, winning the State Title. Greg also coached Althoff to a 2nd place finish in 2015.

Matt Laur had a stellar career @ South Central H.S. & he went on to have a record-setting 4 yrs. @ McKendree Univ.. Matt became McKendree's all-time scorer (2,874 pts.) to go along with 1,522 rebounds. He led McKendree to a NAIA Div.I Final Four & was the NAIA Div.I Nat'l POY.

Deuces are wild for Candace Parker. She won 2 state titles @ Naperville Central, 2 NCAA Titles @ Univ. of Tn., 2 U.S. Olympic Team Basketball Gold Medals, 2 WNBA MVP Awards & 2 WNBA Championships. There is no player (man or woman) from an IL H.S. that has been that successful.

Last night Hebron H.S. not only hosted the 1A Boys Regional Championship, but also celebrated the 70th Anniversary of Hebron's 1952 State Championship. L-R - Paul Judson, Ken Spooner, Kurt Gibson (IHSA) & Phil Judson. It was truly a memorable experience & a 1st Class Event.

One of our best is Tyra Buss. She was Ms. Basketball IL. in 2013 & 14, IL. Gatorade POY & All-State. Tyra led her Mt. Carmel, IL. Team to a 112-16 record while averaging 38 ppg & 5.5 spg. Buss attended I.U & is their all-time leading scorer (2,364) & also in assists & steals.

The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association & the Basketball Museum of Illinois congratulates Coach Mike Bailey on his 600th victory. The IBCA HOF Coach is one of the best teachers and mentors you can find anywhere. The impact he has had on his players & staff is immeasurable.

Centralia H.S. Boys Basketball Coach Lee Bennett is one of the finest coaches in Illinois. Going into the 22-23 season Lee's teams have won 616 games. The IBCA HOF'er coached the Orphans to the state runner-up finish in 2011. Lee also had success at Dakota & Alton High Schools.

IBCA HOF Coach David Witzig of Normal Community H.S. has had a terrific run leading their boys basketball program. Going into this season his teams have won 468 x & earned 10 regional titles. David has also guided the Ironmen to a 4th & 2nd place finishes in the IHSA Tournament.

Congratulations to Larry Tucker on his entrance into the IBCA HOF. Larry was a standout player @ Marist H.S. (1979) & had a terrific career @ Lewis Univ. He is the Flyers all time scoring leader with 2,120 pts.& holds the f.g.% record, making 69% of his shots.

It was a grand night @ the Academy Awards of Illinois Basketball also known as the IBCA HOF Banquet. Pictured is Rob Judson, honored to receive the Ron & Rich Herrin Award along with his Father Phil Judson. Both are IBCA Hall of Famers.

We tweeted a tribute to Adrienne (Dickerson) Range recently. We are saddened to share with you that our IBCA Hall of Fame teammate passed away May 10, @ the age of 41 from cancer. Adrienne was a great player @ Carthage H.S. & Illinois College. We know she is now in GOD'S HOF.

One of our toughest & best players is Jerry Sloan. In 1960, he was All-State @ McLeansboro H.S. & then led Evansville Univ. to Nat'l Titles. His jersey, #4 was the 1st jersey to be retired by the Bulls. Jerry is one the best coaches in NBA History.

Today we recognize Karrie Redeker as a player. She was All State @ Crescent-Iroquois & an excellent career @ SIU Carbondale. Karrie helped lead SIU to 2 NCAA appearances & was an excellent 3 pt. shooter. She also is an IBCA HOF Player.

There are so many great basketball coaches in Illinois. One we should never overlook is Dave Bennett of Pittsfield. Dave coached at Pittsfield from 1976 to 1999. He never had a losing season and he finished with a record of 527-146.

We like to congratulate Hersey Hawkins as it was announced a few days ago that he will be part of the 2021 Class that will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball HOF. Hersey is one of the most lethal scorers in college b-ball hist. His sr. yr. @ Bradley he avg.36 ppg

One of the winningest girls basketball coaches is IBCA HOF'er Randy Weibel. His teams at Mendota & Rockton Hononegah won 700 games, 21 regional titles & 5 sectional championships. At Mendota he had 1 team reach the Elite 8 & his 2018-19 Hononegah team finished 3rd in state.

Matt Laur an IBCA HOF Player led Farina South Central H.S. to the Sweet 16 averaging 20.2 ppg & 10.6 rpg.. Matt went on to a record-setting career at McKendree Univ. scoring 2,874 pts. & gathering 1,522 rebs.. He was the NAIA Div. I National POY & played in 4 NAIA Tournaments.

Fred Van Vleet of Rockford Auburn is one of our great players playing in the NBA. In 2012 he led the the Knights to the Final 4 & did the same thing the next season @ Wichita St. U.. He was All-Missouri Valley & Conf. P.O.Y. Fred led the Toronto Raptors to the 2019 NBA title.

There are not many gyms left in Illinois where the basketball court is on a stage. This one is located at the old Elburn H.S. that closed in the 1960's. An old sign states the seating capacity was 500. Do you know of any gyms in Illinois that still exist that are on a stage?

HOF Coach Mike Bailey, has had great success @ St.Gregory H.S., Dundee-Crown H.S. & St. Pat's H.S. in Chicago. His teams have won more than 500 games. At St. Pat's, Bailey has 23 consecutive winning seasons & still counting (amazing). Mike is a past President of the IBCA.

Illinois Basketball Fact: Hersey Hawkins who played for Chicago Westinghouse H.S. & Bradley University (1984-88) is 11th on the all-time NCAA Men's scoring list with 3,008 points. We thank Bradley University for the picture.

IBCA Charter Member Doug Collins may be the youngest to enter the IBCA HOF. Doug was an All-State player at Benton H.S & All-American at ISU. He is an Olympic hero & was the 1st pick in the 1973 NBA draft. Doug was also a terrific TV basketball analysist & successful NBA Coach.

Jim Johnson of West Frankfort was inducted into the IBCA HOF as a Friend of Basketball (2020). Jim has served as the P.A. annoncer @ W. Frankfort H.S. for 40 yrs. Jim also coached for 4 yrs. @ Eldorado H.S., Eldorado J.H. 2 yrs. & 23 yrs. @ W. Frankfort J.H. That's service!

Kurt Pegler's passion for sports began as a sports editor for Hoffman Estates H.S. & continued in college @ ISU. Since 1987, Kurt (IBCA HOF'er) has worked for Peoria's WMBD-TV covering h.s. sports. He also has worked IHSA basketball broadcasts & does the play-by-play for ISU.

We miss IBCA HOF Coach Kevin Brown who is in GOD'S HOF. Kevin coached @ Bloomington Cent. Catholic & Washington. His teams won over 400 games. He led Cent. Cath. to the Elite 8 in 2002 & guided Washington to 4th place in the 2008 Class 3A State Tournament.

Bill Heisler (IBCA HOF'er) scored 36 points as Warsaw edged Spring Valley Hall in overtime in the 1997 Class A State Title Game. Bill went onto play @ Western IL. Univ. where he set school records for steals (167), 3-pt. field goals (216) & 3-pt attempts (576).

One of the most successful Girls' Coaches in IL. Is Todd Hopkins. His Ottawa Marquette Girls' Teams have won 385 games, 5 regional titles & 2 sectional champioships. He also coached the Marquette Boys' to a 68-26 record & 2 regional crowns. Todd entered the IBCA HOF in 2020.

Taking over a dormant program is a tough task. For the new coach establishing a winning program & maintaining it is a challenge.This is what Janet Holst did @ Salem H.S. In the 10 yrs. prior to her arrival they were 54-187, 21 yrs. later Salem was 426-206 with 2 Elite 8 trips.

One of the greatest basketball families in Illinois Basketball is the Douglas Family from Quincy. We were fortunate to meet with Keith & Dennis Douglas Friday night. Both are IBCA Hall of Fame Players who contributed greatly to the success of the Quincy H.S. basketball program.

In 2022, Donna (Luechtefeld) Tebbe was inducted into the IBCA HOF as a Player. She scored 1,855 pts. & grabbed a record 1,033 rebs. for Okawville High School. She was a 2x All-Stater & the Belleville News Democrat POY in 1990. Donna played at St. Louis Univ. & is in their HOF.

There are only 3 schools that have 2000 varsity wins. One of them is Collinsville. Note that Mrs. Violet Fletcher is the middle. This was a class act as she was the "Team Mom" for decades helping the love of her life Vergil. We did record a spirited oral history with Violet.

Jeff Elder, a fixture @ Gibson City-Melvin Sibley Middle School & is an IBCA HOF Career Coach (2020). He coached the 8th grade boys from 1979-1999 & the 7th grade girls from 1999-2013. Today, the most outstanding 8th grade student-athlete @ GCMS receives the Jeff Elder Award.

Chris Duerr has been a fixture as the KHOA-TV anchor in Quincy. Chris was chosen to receive the IHSA's Distinguished Media Award in 2018-19 school yr. Many will tell you he is Mr. Excitement in the Quincy Region. In 2019, Chris was inducted into the IBCA HOF as a Media Member.

We couldn't overlook Dee Brown, from Proviso East. In 2001 Dee was Mr. IL. Basketball & Gatorade Player of the Yr..At Illinois he helped lead them to the NCAA Title game & 37- 2 record. Dee was also Big 10 & Nat'l Player of the Year.

Karrie Redeker is only one of 17 individuals who are in the IBCA HOF as both a player & coach. She began her coaching career at Tolono Unity H.S. in 1999 where her teams won 158 x & won 5 regional titles. Karrie then went on to coach at Parkland College & Illinois Cent. College.

Illinois Basketball Fact: Kloe Frobe who led Lincoln H.S. to an undefeated state title finished her career scoring 3,262 pts. which is the 5th best in IHSA Girl's Basketball History. She also set IHSA State Tournament scoring records. Kloe has also been named 2024 Max Preps POY.

Russ Damhoff ended his triumphant 31 yr. career as the men's basketball coach @ Sauk Valley Comm. College in 2017. Russ earned several COY awards & his teams won 592 x. He is in the NJCAA Region IV HOF & in the IBCA HOF. Pictured with Russ is his wife Jackie @ the IBCA Banquet.
